The Truth About Salt and Concrete

Most people think salt eats away at concrete, but the real culprit is usually the freeze/thaw cycle. Because concrete is porous, it creates a sponge-like effect, soaking up saltwater as snow melts. If the temperature drops low enough to refreeze that water, the ice expands and blasts the surface of the concrete apart. This creates more cracks, leading to even more water absorption and damage.

To protect your driveway or walk, choose an ice melt that won’t refreeze overnight. If temperatures stay above 25°F, Halite rock salt is your safest option. However, if it drops below 25°F, you should switch to a blend containing Magnesium or Calcium. Note the trade-off: While Magnesium and Calcium are slightly harder on concrete chemically, they prevent the much worse mechanical damage caused by ice expanding inside your concrete.

Keep in mind that fresh concrete is the most likely to be damaged by salt and ice melts so you may want to consider using an alternative such as sand.

Halite (Rock Salt)

What it is:
Halite is natural sodium chloride — the classic rock salt most people know. It works by lowering the freezing point of water, causing ice to melt.

Pros:

• Cost-effective and widely available

• Works well in moderate conditions

• Provides traction on icy surfaces

Cons:

• Less effective at lower temperatures

• Can be corrosive concrete over time

• May leave some residue

Best for: Businesses or homeowners needing quick, efficient melting power in colder conditions.

Encapsulated Ice Melt

What it is:
Encapsulated products combine rock salt with a liquid coating of magnesium brine. The coating helps the pellets activate faster and melt ice at lower temperatures.

Pros:

• Faster acting than plain halite

• Works at lower temperatures (down to about 0°F)

• Reduces scatter and waste due to coating adhesion

Cons:

• Slightly higher cost than plain rock salt

• Still mildly corrosive to concrete

Best for: Businesses or homeowners needing quick, efficient melting power in colder conditions.

Calcium Chloride Pellets

What it is:
Calcium chloride is a premium ice melt that attracts moisture to form a brine, generating heat to melt ice quickly — even in extreme cold.

Pros:

• Melts ice at temperatures as low as -25°F

• Works faster than most other options

• Leaves minimal residue

• Melts more snow per pound of product

Cons:

• Higher upfront cost

• Can be overkill for light, infrequent snow

• Can be chemically abrasive to concrete

Best for: Extreme cold and high-traffic areas
